One such dramatic incident between Trump and Zelensky at the White House was the early cutback of the Ukrainian president’s visit. The matter, however, is gaining voices from Russian officials and state media, making it a turning point in the US-Ukraine relationship.
Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, praised Trump for showing “restraint” during the argument, accusing Zelensky of dishonesty, particularly in claiming that Ukraine was left alone without support in 2022. She had further mockingly called him “unpleasant with everyone.”
Dmitry Medvedev, who was formerly the president of Russia and is now the deputy head of the Security Council, did not mince his words. According to him, Zelensky was nothing more than an “insolent pig” who was slapped down properly by Trump. Medvedev added that the leadership of Ukraine was dragging the world toward a very serious war and demanded an end to military assistance from the US.
Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, would characterize the argument as “historic.” Dmitriev, who engaged in the discussions that occurred recently in Saudi Arabia between the US and Russia, would observe that the clash is also symbolic of a turning point in American policy toward Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Yevgeny Primakov, head of Russia’s International Humanitarian Cooperation Agency, criticized Zelensky for trying to instigate conflicts.
This event was widely reported by Russian state media. RT posted on X that Zelensky sat with folded hands while Trump and Vice President JD Vance called on him. Russian media framed the incident as a moment of humiliation for the Ukrainian leader and a growing turnaround of the US toward his government.
Although most of the European leaders rushed to support Zelensky, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a long-time ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, sided with Trump. Orban has consistently criticized Europe for aiding Ukraine and has insisted on negotiations with Russia.
The fallout from the White House meeting continues to ignite debate, with analysts also being on the lookout for any changes in US-Ukraine relationships following the tense interaction.
