Uttarakhand Avalanche: 8 Dead, 46 Rescued in 3-Day Operation

The avalanche that occurred in Mana Village in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on February 28, 2025 (Friday), at approximately 5:30 AM, claimed the lives of eight people. The remaining four bodies were recovered on Sunday, March 2, at the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) project site, which was struck by the avalanche on Friday.

As of Monday, the rescue operations following the avalanche near Mana Village in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district concluded on Sunday.

At the time of the avalanche, 54 workers were present at the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) project site when the snow buried the containers they were using as living quarters. Out of the 54 workers, forty-six were successfully rescued by emergency teams, while eight tragically lost their lives.

During this three-day rescue operation, a total of eight helicopters were deployed from the Armed Forces—five from the Army, two from the Air Force, and one civilian helicopter. These helicopters evacuated all rescued persons from Mana Post, near the avalanche site, to Joshimath Military Hospital.

Out of the 46 rescued workers, 44 were admitted to the military hospital in Joshimath and are in stable condition. The remaining two workers are undergoing treatment at AIIMS Rishikesh, and their condition is improving. “Proper medical arrangements have been made for their treatment, and all their needs are being taken care of,” the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) stated.

Earlier, on Sunday, while the search was still ongoing, Lt. Colonel Manish Srivastava, Defence PRO Dehradun, spoke about the advanced equipment being used in the operation. “To assist the search and rescue operations, a drone-based ‘intelligent buried object detection system’ was airlifted from Delhi and transported to Joshimath via Dehradun on an MI-17 helicopter,” he said. Additionally, the Army deployed three mini drones and five quadcopters for the search.

The eight victims were identified as Mohinder Pal and Harmesh Chand from Himachal Pradesh; Jitender Singh, Manjeet Yadav, Alok Yadav, and Ashok Paswan from Uttar Pradesh; and Anil Kumar and Arvind Kumar Singh from Uttarakhand.
