Opposition Protests Disrupt Rajya Sabha Over Voter ID, Language Issues

On Tuesday, the Rajya Sabha sessions were taken apart because of Opposition chaos after the Deputy Chairman, Harivansh Narayan, would not admit notices filed under Rule 267. A total of 21 notices were moved, with 18 offered by the TMC, Congress, BJD, and AAP regarding the alleged duplication of voter IDs. Finally, the House was adjourned for a brief period following the protests.

The second phase of the Parliamentary Budget Session, which commenced on Monday, is under repeated disruptions. The Lok Sabha saw a heated exchange after DMK members protested union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s remarks. Pradhan had said that Tamil Nadu had been ”dishonest” in implementing the PM Schools for Rising India scheme, leading to an uproar over the imposition of Hindi.

The Congress, meanwhile, met for a high-level meeting to strategize its approach for the ongoing session. Party sources stated that it plans to bring up the alleged voter list manipulation and fight against education policy 2020 tooth and nail. ‘

The Congress plans to challenge the Waqf Amendment Bill if it comes to discussions for the passage and wants to raise its voice against the delimitation exercise, which is now being conducted and could impact the constituencies. The Budget Session is likely to get turbulent, at least with Opposition protests looming ahead of both Houses as the big policy debates get shadowed by the ugly political fighting.
