The United States on Saturday night executed intense large-scale airstrikes against the Houthi rebels in Yemen which killed around 31, with 101 wounded. According to the US Central Command, the attacks were designed to protect American interests by deterring threats from a hostile actor, as well as to reopen essential shipping lanes. Images of fighter jets launching off an aircraft carrier and of bombs hitting buildings in Yemen were circulated by the military officials.
It was announced by former US President Donald Trump on his social media forum, Truth Social. warning the Houthis to stop fueling their sour note by saying, “THE TIME IS UP AND YOUR ATTACKS MUST STOP TODAY.” He also warned Iran to be on the lookout for supporting the group, saying, “If you do, BEWARE, because America will hold you fully accountable.” Trump pounded the former president Joe Biden for inaction toward the Houthis rebels.
The strikes came after the Houthis threatened to keep shipping blocked in the Red Sea until Israel lifted restrictions on aid to Palestinians and attacked ships in the region, claiming that they were carrying out actions of protest against Israel.
After those airstrikes, Houthis vowed to retaliate. They said on their Al-Masirah TV channel, “Our forces are prepared to match escalation with escalation.” The Health Ministry of Yemen declared 20 deaths with some others injured because of the strikes.
According to the Houthi rebels, “America’s air maneuvers with their friends were nothing but acts of criminal brutality and aggression,”. The US and Britain were accused of aggression. Earlier this month, the US reclassified as a “foreign terrorist organization” the Houthis because it accused them of attacks on US warships and commercial vessels since 2023.
