A chant is blooming across the internet that the US spent $21M to boost voter turnout in India’s election. One day after Trump’s meeting with the Republican Governors Association (RGA), news revealed that the previous government had sanctioned USD 21 million for internal interference in India.
The Indian foreign ministry chanted that whatever happened is ‘deeply concerning.’ Foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We are concerned about this matter breaking out by the US administration regarding certain USAID activities and funding. This is clearly problematic because it led to foreign interference in India’s internal affairs. Our team is looking into the matter, and we’ll update you about everything.
This claim was made by President Trump in a public gathering in Miami after getting an announcement from DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency), led by Elon Musk. He said, Why are we caring about India’s turnout? We are facing enough problems, and we use this amount to cut out our debt. The administration has raised questions about $21 million for the political scenario of Bangladesh and about the same amount for Nepal.
Now, the BJP targets the opposition party “Congress” behind this game. They are attacking Rahul Gandhi, sharing a video on social media from a meeting in London. In that video, Rahul Gandhi urged US and European organizations to take an interest in India’s internal affairs. Amit Malviya continuously criticized him, calling it a kickback scheme. The congress denied the allegation, calling Trump’s claims nonsensical. Congress spokesperson Jayraam Ramesh denied this claim as irrelevant. He asked the government to bring evidence of this claim.
Despite widespread reports, Trump and Musk still have not revealed any evidence that USAID gave India $21m for voter turnout. Former election chief SY Qureshi denied any claims made by the US administration. Mr. Qureshi said this is malicious, as there had been nothing happening related to this past.
