On Wednesday, March 5, seasoned Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs). Earlier today, Aussie star batsman Steve Smith also announced his retirement from ODIs.
Taking to his official Facebook page, he wrote, “I am announcing my retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) as of today. Alhamdulillah for everything. While our achievements may have been limited on a global level, one thing is certain: whenever I stepped onto the field for my country, I gave 100 percent with dedication and honesty,” he said.
The last few weeks have been very challenging for me, and I have come to realize that this is my destiny. “Wa tu’izzu man tasha’ wa tu’zhilu man tasha” [And He honors whom He wills, and He disgraces whom He wills] (3:26), Allah says in the Quran. May Almighty Allah forgive us and grant us righteous Iman to all,” he said.
I have played cricket for almost two decades, and for that, I would like to deeply thank my family, friends, and fans for their support.
In August 2006, Mushfiqur made his debut against Zimbabwe in an ODI. He now retires as the most-capped Bangladeshi player in ODIs, with 274 matches in which he scored almost 8,000 runs at an average of 36.42, including nine centuries, with a career-best of 144. He took 243 catches and effected 56 stumpings as a wicketkeeper.
