Donald Trump (US President) announced plans to make Washington, DC, into a “crime-free capital,” emphasising the need for a cleaner, safer, more visually appealing city for visiting world leaders.
Trump stressed his commitment to restoring the capital’s image, asserting that heads of state – including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi–should not have to witness urban decay when they visit.
“We aim to have a capital that will be the talk of the world. When leaders like Prime Minister Modi of India, the President of France, and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom visited me in the past week and a half, I didn’t want them to see tents, graffiti, broken barriers, or potholes on the roads,”
Trump stated.
“I had it looking beautiful, and we’re going to make sure that continues for the city.”
Further, he also pledged to restore law and order in the capital, promising a drastic reduction in crime rates and a safer environment for residents and visitors alike.
“We’re going to have a crime-free capital. When people visit, they won’t have to worry about being mugged, shot, or assaulted. We’re going to restore a crime-free capital. It will be cleaner, better, and safer than ever before, and it won’t take us long to get there,” he added.
He took this step after Prime Minister Modi’s soon visit to the USA, which was hailed as “productive and substantive.” During the visit, Pm Modi held extensive discussion with trump and other faces, including newly confirmed Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. Both leaders focused on strategic and security cooperation, defence, trade, economic engagement, technology, energy security, and regional and global concerns.
Current Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had highlighted the importance of the visit, stating, “The Prime Minister has just concluded a highly substantive and productive visit to the United States at the invitation of President Donald Trump. This marks the Prime Minister’s first visit to the U.S. following President Trump’s second-term inauguration. The visit underscores the importance both leaders place on the India-US relationship.”
