Over 400 Killed in Gaza as Israel Resumes Strikes Amid Ceasefire Deadlock

More than 400 people have been killed in Gaza as ceasefire talks fail. At least 413 people were killed in Gaza on Tuesday as Israel bombed Hamas without negotiation as a stronghold. It was the deadliest attack since the January 19 ceasefire. Most of those killed were children, women and old people, according to Gaza’s civil defence agency.

Around 150 others were reported as seriously injured. Israel ordered schools near the Gaza border to close. Israeli PM’s office said strikes launched because Hamas refusing to free hostages and rejecting multiple mediation efforts including the one led by U.S. President’s envoy Steve Witkoff.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the attack and said it was aimed at securing the release of all hostages. Israel also threatened to ramp up military operations against Hamas.

But, Hamas accused Netanyahu of using the conflict as a political diversion and putting hostages at risk. The group blamed Israel for breaking the cease-fire agreement saying that the attacks that resumed put captives in Gaza at greater danger.

A White House spokesperson said Israel consulted with President Donald Trump’s administration before carrying out the strikes.  Israel wanted to prolong the first phase of a three-stage truce until mid-April to stick to its demand of total demilitarization of Gaza. However, Hamas insisted that the hostage releases would only take place under the second phase, set to commence on March 2.

The conflict started on 7 October, 2023 when Hamas attacked southern Israel.  Killing 1,200 people, taking 251 hostages. Since Israel’s retaliation, over 48,000 Palestinians have died and 112,000 more have been injured, reports say.
