Russia-Ukraine War: President Donald Trump of the United States and President Vladimir Putin of Russia talked by phone today about a potential ceasefire in the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. According to the White House, some sort of limited ceasefire has been agreed upon by the leaders, to be directed mainly at energy and infrastructure-related sites. The Kremlin described the talks as detailed and relatively frank discussions. Putin put forth several conditions for a ceasefire, among them that Ukrainian citizens would not be subjected to forcible mobilization and that there would be no supplying of arms to Ukraine’s military.
Russia-Ukraine War has existed for more than two years now, which have been sanguinary years in which much destruction and the displacement of millions have occurred. Ukraine is getting heavy military and financial assistance from Western countries, including the U.S. and various European countries, to fight that aggression. However, no agreement has been made regarding the ceasefire, but this conversation is considered to be reducing tension and establishing peace.
The international community is watching the situation for a potential ceasefire, which may bring some temporary relief to civilians suffering from the consequences of Russia-Ukraine War. A White House contact said that Trump highlighted the need for diplomatic talks and a conclusive diplomatic resolution, though there was no immediate reply from the Ukrainian side. At this time, uncertainty looms over any acceptance by Ukraine of the Russian terms for a ceasefire but support will still be offered to Ukraine by the Western allies as further discussions are expected in the next days.
