Mizoram Set for Improved Rail Connectivity with ₹7,714 Crore Sairang Bridge Project

Mizoram is one of the Indian states that still does not have railway connectivity and lacks proper transportation links. But this problem is now solved as the government provides Railways funds of Rs 7,714 crore for the Sairang Railway Bridge project to connect Aizawl with the national railway network.

The larger Bairabi-Sairang Railway project will ensure better connectivity of the northeastern state, Mizoram, with India’s national railway. The project, listed as state infrastructure, will be ready in July this year.

The Railway Ministry is fully prepared to complete this project. Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw posted about the milestone on social media, lauding it as “a major flip for connectivity in the region.”

Since the Mizoram Accord or getting statehood in 1987, the region has faced many inequalities in transportation and merchandise. Now the situation will change in the region as the bridge will enhance the efficiency of transportation of people and goods, reducing travel time, and facilitating access to remote areas.

In the hilly terrain, such infrastructure advancement is significant for the people and goods. They can easily travel to other states and also ensure accountable work, saving more time.

The bridge is expected to bring many economic development opportunities, including improving freight transportation routes for local traders, businessmen, and farmers of Mizoram.

K. Vanlalvena, a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, highlighted the significant progress of the 51.38-km broad gauge railway line connecting Bairabi on the Assam border to Sairang near Aizawl.

According to the Times of India, the project is slated for inauguration in July 2025. So far, ₹7,714 crore has been spent out of the total estimated cost of ₹8,215 crore.

The new railway line will have four railway stations, including Sairang-Sihmui, Mualkhang, Kawanpui, and Hortoki. This project is part of a broader initiative to strengthen infrastructure in the Northeast (Mizoram) aimed at enhancing connectivity between these regions and the rest of the country.
