Mizoram Woman Arrested for Attempting to Sell Her Two Children Due to Poverty

Aizawl: A 25 year-old woman from Mizoram caught in Champhai on wednesday for attempting to sell her two minor children, allegedly due to poverty and debt. 

According to a report made by the Police, the woman, Lalsangpuii, allegedly used a mobile phone application to search for potential buyers and approached a woman she thought might be interested in purchasing her children, aged six and one-and-a-half years. 

“The woman had a history of defaulting on loans, owing more than ₹50,000 to private lenders. She also had outstanding loans with a private bank, the total amount of which she was unable to determine,” he said, requesting anonymity. 

Champhai police took action after the Chairman of the Mizoram Child Welfare Committee (CWC) filed an FIR against a woman, accusing her of attempted human trafficking and violations under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act.
