Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to make a two-day visit to the US to meet with the newly elected President Donald Trump. According to Reuters, Trump has invited PM Modi to the White House next week. This statement came after a US military plane departed to return deported migrants to the country.
This journey will start from February 12, to hold dinner talks among these two leaders on a range of issues, including trade, defense, immigration, and security. The Ministry of External Affairs officially announced that the Prime Minister had a call with the US President on January 27. Both discussed several issues, including Trump’s concern on immigration and security.
This visit will be significant in the aspect of emphasizing bilateral trade among countries. The US deported 104 Indian immigrants by C-17 US military aircraft on February 6 at Amritsar Airport, Punjab. After this, the government is actively engaging in talks with US officials.
After coming into power, Trump has made several decisions, including tariffs on China, banning transgender people in female sports, and now he has taken action against illegal immigrants. He said that for the first time in history, we are locating and loading illegal aliens into military aircraft and flying them back to the places from which they came. For the Indian immigrants, he said India will do what’s right on the deportation of illegal migrants on a phone call.
According to a Bloomberg report, more than 18000 undocumented Indian migrants living illegally in the US had so far been identified, but the real number is likely to be higher. Pew Research estimated 725,000 unauthorized Indian immigrants were living in the US. Now, the government is reckoning with these issues to solve them and ensure accountability among each other.
However, an earlier plan was made by Indian officials to visit Modi in France. In the next week, on February 10 to 11, Modi will visit France to co-chair a conference on artificial intelligence, hosted by President Emmanuel Macron. This summit is gathering at the Grand Palais in the presence of heads of state and government, leaders of international organizations, CEOs of small and large companies, representatives of academia, and non-government organizations.
From the American side, vice president JD Vance is expected to represent the United State at the conference. Later on concluding this summit, Modi is expected to move towards the US. This would be the prime minister’s first bilateral visit to the US since Trump came in power in January. Modi will be the first global leader to meet Trump in the White House since his second victory.
