India’s Capital gets fourth Women Head of Government

Breaking all mystery, BJP has confirmed its Chief Ministerial candidate for Delhi after the legislature meeting on Wednesday, February 19. Rekha Gupta, who has been chosen to be the 4th woman face as CM. 

After a cordial meeting at the party office, BJP has declared that women face Rekha Gupta, a party leader, who will take oath on February 20 at the famous Ramleela Ground. Meanwhile, Pravesh Verma is set to take on the role of Deputy Chief Minister in the upcoming regime. 

Rekha Gupta, 50, will become the second woman from the BJP to hold the post of Chief Minister of Delhi. An MLA who will be elected as the fourth woman chief minister after Atishi Singh, Sheela Dixit, and Sushma Swaraj. As a first-time MLA, Gupta contested from the Shalimar Bagh constituency against the Aam Aadmi Party’s leader, Bandana Kimati, in the Delhi assembly election, winning by more than 29000 votes.

She was born in 1974 in a small village of Haryana, Nandgarh. Her family moved to Delhi in 1976, where she completed her primary and higher education. Her father was an officer in the State Bank of India. Gupta began her political career in 1992 with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Daulat Ram College, Delhi University. Thereafter, she became president of the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) in 1996-97.

As a lawyer, she is active in Delhi state politics, and in 2007, she won the Delhi councillor elections from North Pitampura. Further, she launched the Sumedha Yojana to assist economically weaker female students in higher education. She took initiatives to empower women as chair of the women welfare and child development committee. She played a significant role in her initial journey as general secretary of BJP Mahila Morcha as a part of its national executive committee.
