KIIT Issue Raised to Diplomatic Solution

A few days back, a Nepalese student allegedly died by suicide in Kalinga Institute of (KIIT) hostel. Days after her death, students accused the university administration of ordering Nepali students to vacate the hostel. The report says more than 150 students have left the campus and returned to the country via the Raxaul border.

Assistant Chief District Officer of Parsa, Suman Kumar Karki, said that until now 159 students have arrived home until February 20. Few students and their relatives are protesting on the streets in Nepal to get justice.

Students Died at KIIT

A 20-year-old, third-year B Tech student (computer science), Prakrtiti Lamsal, at Kalinga Institute of Technology (KIIT) in Odisha, allegedly died by suicide in her hostel room on February 16. Campus is now in unrest due to this case happening in the presence of college administration.

Students are alleging that college officials are treating them as inhuman” at the university campus after the mysterious death of Prakriti Lamsal. “We were abused and treated inhumanely,” said students who went back to Nepal.

More than 1000 Nepalese students are studying in KIIT, Odisha. Most of the students are doing engineering on a fellowship given by the central government. After this case, students have been abducted in unconscious situations. Most of the students said in media reports that they were beaten up by security guards in the presence of university teachers and other staff.

They had been ordered to vacate the college hostel immediately after Prakrtiti’s death. Students are not safe inside the college campus after getting assurance from the university administration.

Students are saying that the government should interfere in this matter, and they should investigate the Lamsal murder.

Now, this case has become an issue between two nations. On Thursday, Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba said that the government has resolved the issues  arising out of the death of the Nepalese female student through diplomatic mode.

“The Nepal government has resolved the problem surrounding the death of a Nepali student in KIIT Odisha through diplomatic channels by handling the situation seriously.”

Mrs. Deuba says

She also said, Officially, we have engaged with the Odisha government on the matter to ensure an impartial investigation. On the other hand, the Odisha government focused on the issues and took serious action to form a high-level investigation committee.

These issues have been reached at a disruptive corner between two heads. The Odisha government strictly considers these issues to make everything transparent. While KIIT administration requested students to come back and rejoin their classes.
