First session of the newly constituted Eighth Delhi Legislative Assembly began today, marking the start of legislative proceedings. MLAs took their oath with Delhi’s CM Rekha Gupth first to be sworn in, administered by Pro-tem Speaker Arvinder Singh Lovely who was appointed by Lt. Governor VK Saxena. Lovely presided over initial proceedings and administered the oaths to the MLAs.
Atishi, former Delhi CM and AAP MLA from Kalka ji, named a Leader of opposition. She is the first woman leader of the opposition of the Delhi assembly. She extended her thanks to AAP coordinator Arvind Kejriwal.
She tweeted
“I am grateful to the National Convenor of AAP,
@ArvindKejriwal ji, and the legislative party for entrusting me with the responsibility of leading the Aam Aadmi Party legislative group in the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
The people of Delhi have assigned us the role of the opposition, and as a strong opposition, we will ensure that the BJP government fulfills all the promises it made to the people of Delhi. During the elections, Modi ji had guaranteed ₹2500/month to all women in Delhi. We will definitely make the BJP government fulfill this promise. The Aam Aadmi Party will raise the issues of the public in the House with full strength. The fight for the rights of Delhi and its people will continue.”
Vijender Gupta a senior BJO MLA was elected as the speaker of the Delhi Assembly after his name was proposed by CM Rekha Gupta. This is the same Vijender Gupta who was once thrown out of the Delhi assembly by Marshalls. After winning the election he was the center of discussion across the social media platforms also in the meme arena.
The first day included the swearing-in of ministers to the Rekha Gupta-led cabinet at 11 AM, followed by the Speaker’s election at 2 PM, laying the groundwork for the three-day session (February 24, 25, and 27).
AAP, with 22 MLAs, plans to challenge the BJP on unfulfilled promises, notably the Rs 2,500 monthly aid for women under the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana, ensuring a stormy session ahead.
The session highlights a milestone in gender representation, with women leading both the ruling BJP (Rekha Gupta as CM) and the opposition AAP (Atishi as LoP), a first for the Delhi Assembly.
