The Mahakumbh 2025 has been a prime political talking point, though the opposition’s criticism of the management of the event has scarcely garnered attention. The debate has now centred around the Gandhi family and the members not attending Prayagraj.
There was much speculation surrounding whether Rahul Gandhi or any other members of the Gandhi family would attend, but none did. Their absence itself turned into a political debate, with much questioning of their non-participation. However, in 2001, Sonia Gandhi, the then leader of the opposition, took part in the mystical blending of politics and culture to gain faith in Hindus.
Those questioning the Gandhi family’s non-attendance included Union Minister Ramdas Athawale. Their absence, he said, “hurt Hindu sentiment,” and attending religious events ought not to be seen through a political lens but one of culture and spirituality.
The ruling party has been actively participating to enhance the outreach to religious leaders and devotees at Mahakumbh, enhancing its image as a promoter of India’s cultural heritage. The other side, with their absence from such large religious gatherings, is now being accused of distancing themselves from the pulse of the people.
Since Mahakumbh is one of the biggest religious gatherings in the world, how the political controversy arising from it would influence the pro-settites in the opposition remains to be seen.
