Mizoram’s Chapchar Kut 2025: A Vibrant Celebration of Culture and Unity

Chapchar Kut 2025: The city of Aizawl came alive with the vibrant colors and rhythms of Chapchar Kut, the most important festival in the history of Mizo people was celebrated at the Assam rifles ground on March 6 and 7, 2025. The annual spring festival marks the end of burning of jungles for jhum cultivation and beginning of sowing seeds for agriculture.

The grand festivities were inaugurated at the Assam Rifles Ground in Aizawl, with Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma gracing the occasion as ‘Kut Pa’ (Father of the Festival). Art and Culture Minister Pu C. Lalsawivunga served as the ‘Kut Thlengtu’ (Host of the Festival). This year’s theme, “Zo Nun Ze Mawi – Hawihhawmna” (The Beautiful Zo Behaviour – Respect for Others), highlighted the importance of respect as a core value in Mizo society. 

While addressing the crowd Mizoram CM Lalduhoma discussed the importance of preserving traditions and rich heritage of Mizo society. He stressed on promoting the practice of ‘Hawihhawmna’ which is about showing respect with action rather than just words.

The celebration displayed the rich cultural heritage of the Mizos through traditional performances. Traditional dances such as Cheraw (bamboo dance), Khuallam, and Sarlamkai were performed by various cultural troupes, including the Mizo Cultural Organization, Central Young Mizo Association (YMA), and students from local schools. The enthusiasm of the crowd attending the event dressed in the traditional attire of various tribes of the state reflected the community’s deep-rooted cultural pride.

Chapchar Kût 2025 not only showcased the traditional values of the Mizo society but also reinforced the values of respect, unity, and community bonding. The festival concluded on a high note, leaving participants and spectators alike with cherished memories and a strengthened sense of identity.
