Tahawwur Rana, convicted for the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai, is expected to be extradited to India on April 9. According to the media reports, he has flown to India by a special plane. He has filed a plea to the United States Supreme Court, which was rejected, on his extradition. The decision is a pivotal moment in India’s longstanding plea to bring back a 64-year-old to justice.

According to several sources, multiple agency teams have reached the US and taken up all the paperwork and legal issues with US authorities before bringing back Mr Rana.
The deportation process is reportedly being coordinated by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs. After arriving in India, he is expected to be taken into custody by the National Testing Agency (NIA), where he will remain in custody for several weeks as the investigation proceeds. Meanwhile, authorities in India are making preparations to keep Rana in high prison security.

Rana is a Canadian national from Pakistan, a former physician, businessman, and immigration consultant. He is closely associated with David Coleman Headley, the Pakistani-American terrorist who played a key role in planning the 2008 Mumbai attacks. He has also been linked to the terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI.
Before taking back to India, Rana had filed an emergency application for stay pending litigation of petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus with US Apex Court Justice Elena Kagan. His application was denied in March, and the full court reaffirmed that decision earlier this month.
Meanwhile, India has persistently sought Rana’s extradition due to his alleged involvement in the coordinated terror attack that claimed the lives of more than 160 people in Mumbai in 2008.
