In an interview with Mirchi Marathi, Mahesh Manjrekar stated, “Vicky Kaushal is a very good actor. His film ‘Chhaava’ did well, earning around ₹800 crore. But Vicky should never say that people came to see him. If that were the case, his previous five films would have also been hits.”

‘Chhaava’, directed by Laxman Utekar, is a historical drama based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The film was released on 14 February 2025 and features Vicky Kaushal in the lead role, with Rashmika Mandanna, Akshaye Khanna, and others in supporting roles.

The film received a strong response from audiences, particularly in Maharashtra, where viewers connected deeply with the portrayal of Maratha history. Many audience members were moved to tears, and some even dressed in traditional attire to watch the film.

Mahesh Manjrekar highlighted the significant contribution of Maharashtra to the film’s success, stating that 80% of the credit goes to the state, with Pune alone accounting for 90% of that.  He emphasized that the audience came to see the character of Sambhaji Maharaj, not just the actor portraying him.
